Adventure 75: Potter's Creek Campground/Canyon Lake, TX/Post A

The view from our living room
Not that far from the I-35 corridor is a fairly big reservoir called Canyon Lake. It's about thirty-five miles northeast of New Braunfels, and it appears to be not only the playground of the Texans, but also the homes of many. Everywhere you look is the rooftop of a home nestled in the hills. We got in just in time. By evening the campground was full. It's a pleasant change from the freeway noise, and it's nice to see deer moving through the live oaks. We'll stay here until we move to Austin on Christmas day. After we set up, of course, it was time to check out the local eateries. We had passed a cafe called Granny D's. The parking lot was jammed (Always a good sign), and naturally we went back for lunch. It turned out to be just what we thought it was, the local favorite. Nearly everyone who came in was greeted by name. The cafe is a "home cooking" joint, complete with a hot buffet. We declined the buffet (Meatloaf today) on the grounds that we would eat too much. We shared maybe the best, and definitely the biggest,  club sandwich I've eaten in a long while. Then, in an act of unconscionable weakness, we shared a piece of just baked German chocolate cake. Unlike the heavy cake texture we find at Lindaman's or Huckleberry's at home, this cake's texture was moist, light, barely cooled, and simply delicious. Afterwards, maybe as penance for our guilty pleasure, we managed to get over ten thousands steps around the campground. We also managed to drive around a bit to scout some bike rides. There seem to plenty of back roads, and the weather is supposed to hold through tomorrow. The locals say the weather around here is fickle, but it seems to come in the same four/five day waves that we get back home. Of course, we've started the Potter's Creek Open. So far, we tied 1-1. I've got a good feeling the cribbage gods have changed their minds about me; regardless, life is good, especially today.

You gotta love a sandwich that takes two hands to hold. Real fries, hand cut.
Styrofoam box = left over club. Left over for what? German Chocolate Cake, of course.
This place is definitely not heart healthy. Did you hear Judy say, "Hold the frosting?"

 The vista this a way.

 The vista that a way.
A little Bambi chomping on the acorns midst the live oaks.
Texas sun glowing like Rudolph's nose.
Our newest friends, their sleighs tucked in for a while.

The camping circle next door, closed for winter.
Merry Orange-mess. Orange you glad you're alive?
