Hookem' Horns |
After breakfast and a tie score (Thank you cribbage gods), we headed out for the day under threatening skies. Last night the storm front moved in with high winds and some pecks of rain on our roof. The morning clouds hung low, and by the time we got parked in the little artsy town of Wimberly, the rain was bouncing off the streets, water was running down the gutters, and the puddles were surging like a popular politician's poll numbers. We hunkered down in the truck for a bit, and then we hustled for the covered awnings of the little town square. It's a classic tourist town, full of cute shops, small galleries, and a few restaurants. The reason we were there, beyond the fact that it was on the back road to Austin, is that a lady I met told me I just had to try the Leaning Pear restaurant. Usually, local advice is somewhat suspect, but in this case, the restaurant was so good we ate lunch (Before the game) and dinner (After the game). It reminded me of some of the really fine restaurants we've found in Vermont. The game was awesome. We've seen three NCAA men's basketball games so far on the trip trying to fill the void we feel for our Zags. New Mexico's atmosphere was medium, as was K-State, although it's fair to say both those games were cupcakes on the schedule so the enthusiasm was naturally lacking. The Texas/Michigan State game, however, had all the trappings of a late season tournament game, and the home town Texans really know how to put on a show. Izzo's team pulled away to win handily, but the young Longhorns are very talented and could prove dangerous by the end of the year. Even the seats were burnt orange in the Frank Erwin Center, which is about three times the size of McCarthy where the Zags play. The Texas band was rocking, the dance girls were in sync, the cheerleaders were high flying, and the time out stunts were novel, especially the foul shot taken from the lazy boy sponsored by the local furniture store. Even the T-shirts guns were cool; they were mounted machine gun style, and they shot not one t-shirt but twelve at a time way up high into the stands. For a basketball junkie like me, it was pretty fabulous. We melted in with the post game crowd, found I-35 easily, and retraced our steps to the Leaning Pear. My Hunny Bunny is developing quite the "chops" as a navigator, whether it be on the GPS or her phone. Right now, we're safely tucked in Frac under star filled skies. The weatherman's prediction that the rain would fade into clear skies has proved accurate. Tomorrow should be another sunny day in central Texas, but we don't take our days for granted. We're just happy that life is good, especially today.
Wimberly town square: about thirty shops, most selling high end trinkets.
A tiny little vintage Frac. what a cutie!
The view from Fric while we were waiting to eat lunch.
The Leaning Pear outgrew its place on the town square. This brand new building is very posh and located right on the river just a block from the square.

Dance girls. They spelled out Texas; they then formed the longhorn.
