What a cute trailer babe! |
Today was our last day volunteering with the Mennonite Disaster Service. It was a short, impactful couple of days. Judy helped her sister, Arlene, square things away in the kitchen, and I went with a crew to help finish a couple of decks in Moore, Oklahoma (The hardest hit area in the May storm). Our crew of four was helping another disaster relief group called Convoy of Hope. The leaders were a husband/wife team (Forey/Cindy) from Springfield, Missouri. Forey, a former contractor, was well organized, highly skilled, and exceptional at delegating work. We finished a deck and a half by noon. It was fun to have a definite job. I was at the chop saw cutting the lengths Forey called out, and I managed cleanup for the site. The girls manned the impact drills. Cindy scampered around getting tools and bits, and she spent quite a bit of time under the deck lying on cardboard while handling a power tool. She said she liked the workout. Pete and Zane cut and placed top rails. Mostly, I was eager to finish because I wanted to beat feet out of Oklahoma City not because I was tired of volunteering, but because I wanted to drive south before the frozen air and icy roads manifested themselves (The storm is due Wednesday night). So, it was all good. The decks were finished. The owner (Zane) was happy, and my agitation over the possibility of being caught in the storm eased with every mile we pushed Fric and Frac South. Tonight, we're in Sherman, Texas at a serviceable RV park called the Lazy L. For an overnighter, it will work fine. Tomorrow, we will beat the horses again in order to carry us further South away of the freezing, sleet zone (I thought the South was supposed to be warm!). By Thursday we plan to be in the Corpus Christi area where the weather is predicted to be the warmest but not warm by any means. We'll see. We're looking forward to creating our own schedule again just as soon as we can get to a place where we don't have to worry about running the furnace twenty-four seven. Hopefully, in a few days, we'll get to pose in some spandex while straddling our bike (Now that's an image!). But as usual, life is good, especially today. For me, today was bittersweet. I was eager to get back to our routine with Fric and Frac and to begin a month of exploring Texas, but 2 1/2 weeks in Kansas were wonderful sister time. In my adult life, we have never had such an extended time to just enjoy being together: cooking, baking, volunteering. Fun to just share life together. I'm blessed.
Destiny and Erica, impact drills at the ready.
Zane, who is recovering from a broken back (A steel beam knocked him off for a bad fall), worked as hard as anyone today.
Cleveland Pete and Springfield Cindy.
Not a great shot of Forey, but he had his head down working all morning.
The back deck, half the size of the front.
Job finished: Zane perched on his front deck.
The view from our front window.
Home Sweet Home: Sherman, Texas
Our neighbors: Very friendly, (I'm guessing). We've seen no one.
Frac's girlfriend (An older woman). I hope he behaves himself.
Site 44.
Cute: Our spot is on a lane named after one of the owner's daughters.
