The Other Side of the Tracks. |
Our first night out brought us home about 1:30 A.M. We were lucky to get a seat for Dale Watson's Christmas show turned Honky Tonk. There were so many people, the dancers didn't swing, they just swayed. This morning, even the Hunny Bunny slept in to well after 7:30. We picked up the girls and just made it before they closed off breakfast at the TacoDeli. Our tacos were scrumptious, and we've found another must return to spot (Probably tomorrow). We immediately started hunting for the best rated BBQ in Austin. It is actually thirty miles away in Taylor, Texas-a place called Mueller's. Sadly, they were closed (We should have called), but the drive through Austin upper class pointy roof suburbia was fun, and it was even more fun driving back through farm and ranch country on the back roads. We ended up at Sam's BBQ, which is Austin's hidden gem because once again the neighborhood is hard to love. Sam (Brian is his real name) and Leticia (Who would guess?) hit it off and Sam talked with us for over two hours. It was church. He expounded on the great lies we're brought up with. Santy Clause when you're about this high. The Easter Bunny-How did them rabbits and chickens get together to produce them colored eggs? The devil ain't got no horns and tail, it's treatin' people with unfairness, that's the devil. If we lived with fair dealing and love, things would be all right. And Mary got pregnant against her will (You know what that means), but Joseph forgave her and they moved on. There's Joseph again. Mary's father came to him to ask him to accept Mary. He did, and by doing so, he accepted and cleansed the whole family. And then there's the mother figure missing from the whole story. Where's grandma? You know she's running the show. Mary was a young girl who didn't even know she was pregnant. You mean to tell me she didn't have no help from Momma with that baby. It goes Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That Holy Spirit is the mother figure. I asked Sam, "What church do you go to?" He replied as he pointed to his heart, "This one right here." He said, "We're in church right now, except you won't see me passing the collection basket." He said, "I've accepted Jesus Christ as my savior, and now I know better. And once I know better, I have to do better, which makes me and everyone around me better." And the final lie Sam talked about was that God was somewhere out there. Sam believes that God works through his heart and his actions. At one point, he took Leticia, (and I followed) back into the kitchen where the BBQ cooker was. Then he brought us out sample chicken and sample sausage. The ribs and brisket we ordered were moist and tender. I like the ribs the most. I'll stick with them. All in all, it was the kind of experience not found every day. I didn't tell him my motto, but I think he would agree that life is good, especially today (And if it ain't, get yourself up and change it).
Cowboy wearing a black hat and cowgirl in a red dress. Ready to Honky Tonk.
Quite cheery for breakfast, don't you think.
Migas Plate with amazing whipped mashed potatoes and refried beans.
Vaquero Taco with some bites missing.
One of the cool things about small town Texas is the grand old homes.
Not quite captured is the very cool circular lead glass window in the front door.
The feed at Sam's.
The two chipmunks with their full cheeks.
A rare photo of Fric and Frac-not a selfie.
Fresh ribs ready for eatin'.
Sam (Brian) and Leticia-new best friends.
"You don't need no teeth to eat my beef."
"Come on down, Y'all. We'll treat ya' right."
