Adventure 65: Corpus Christi, TX/Post E

Nice Place Even in Winter
In Claude King's song he warns, "Don't go up to Wolverton Mountain if you're looking' for a wife. Lucky for me I've already got one and "…her lips are sweeter than honey, especially when she's licking some of Rudy's Sissy Sauce off of them. After a fun tour of the botanical garden, we ate lunch at Rudy's Country Store and BBQ. Hiding inauspiciously beside the freeway behind its gas pumps, Rudy's BBQ (Just #3 according to Urban Spoon) was fabulous. We had a turkey sandwich, a brisket sandwich, a small tub of fresh potato salad, and a small tub of fresh cole slaw. It's ala carte at Rudy's; we could have eaten more. In fact, both Judy and I wanted to drive right around the block to try the chicken and the ribs. But we resisted the temptation (Dinnertime is coming, after all). It's by far the best eating experience we've had out in Corpus Christi. It's really warm today (54) and the rain let up as we walked through the botanical gardens and nature area. We were a little disconcerted because every three or four feet there were signs warning of rattlesnakes and wildlife. After our fearsome battle yesterday with the shrimp, the thought of meeting live animals in the wild instead of nearly dead flippy ones scared us spitless (We're not that courageous). Fortunately, the snakes had the good sense to be warming themselves nicely in their burrows while we walked along a tall grass pathway just perfect for them to hide in. Even though it's mid December, there were plenty of orchids blooming, the caged birds were chirping, and the reptiles were eyeing us from their unnaturally heat lamped cages. Only the butterflies seemed absent. The wetlands were alive with birds of all kinds, including some pretty pink ones that were too far away to see clearly. In all, it was another good day of walking, but alas, another day off of the bike. It was also cleaning day. Like at home, the Hunny Bunny does the wash (She won't let me because I put everything in one load), and I clean the house. Not a bad deal when the house is less than 100 square feet. I still have to bend myself around the commode (No easy task with this body), and I still get on my knees to wash the floor, but I think I'll continue to pretend to be incompetent with the wash so we can keep dividing the duties this way. Speaking of pretending, the wily cager sunk to a new low this morning. She pulled the old "alligator tears" trick. She put the wrong card in her crib and wanted it back. Her eye brows crinkled, her honey lips turned down a bit, she let out a small whimper, and she almost had me reaching for my one heart string. But no! I held firm against her female wiles. The Corpus Christi Open is now tied, and we'll play for the title before we pull out in the morning. OK, I did want that jack back in my hand, but he is a good storyteller.  Actually, I think it's a new twist for the repertoire of strategies to win - always fair and square! Needless to say, life is good, especially today.

Take a picture, it'll last longer.
This guy's job is to warn the rest of the flock of intruders. He was doing just that.
The lovey doveys surely took notice.
The bromeliads surely loved the climate. They were everywhere
This little statuette was just dripping with "alligator tears".
Can't imagine how many orchids there'd be during the blooming season.
Morado (him purple) or mirada (her purple) seemed to dominate.
Lots of breeds that were a combination.
And some even had huge, tissue like petals
Careful Dewy, there are snakes in that grass!
The photo doesn't catch them (Where's a good camera when I need one?), but  there are birds everywhere.
Everything that looks like a shadow or a ripple is a bird.
This brass sculpture looks almost alive.
We're smelling the flowers along  the way
You know it's a good spot when the officers of the law sitting next to you are eating pork sandwiches.
I skipped right by Rudy's Sissy Sause and went for Rudy's Bar BQ Sause. OK, maybe they can't spell in Texas, but they sure can cook.
