Adventure 39: Palo Duro Canyon State Park/Amarillo, TX/Post A

Sweet Campground.
About twenty-five miles southeast of Amarillo, Texas the flat lands drop off into an amazing canyon. We're tucked into site 28, and share the place with flocks of turkeys and brush colored deer, both of which seem right at home. We rode the park roads this morning before the wind kicked up, and then we drove up for the day to Amarillo. First, we toured the very funky RV museum. Then we walked around downtown gawking at the huge church buildings. We tried to find the Rock Island Rail trail, but we got hungry before we could. Mostly, we were walking to get our miles in. It's a good thing, too, because we found a great Texas BBQ place called Tyler's BBQ. We shared a three meat plate (sausage, shredded pork, and brisket), and we ordered a plate of ribs to go. The BBQ, our first taste of Texas, was fabulous. The brisket was plastic fork tender, a little smokey, and our favorite. The pork melted in our mouths, and the sausage was no disappointment either. If we lived here, we'd have to work out twice a day just to earn lunch. On a side note, the owner, Tyler, asked us at the counter, randomly, how many people from Amarillo we thought knew that Coeurd 'Alene was right next to Spokane. It turns out that Tyler used to work for Hastings, and that job sent him up to the northwest. He's now back home cooking BBQ, and running out on a regular basis, so if ya' all want any, ya better git here quick. On a side note, the cheater-butt Judy is ahead 2-1 in the Palo Duro Canyon Cribbage Open. She's mad as a wet hen because I was able to get the best of her in Tucumcari. Stay tuned. Her antics and stratagems are becoming legendary.  We're off to Kansas on Monday, but we can't wait to get back to Texas, because if the BBQ is as good in the South of Texas, then life will be good, especially today.
Every summer the Texas Musical Drama is performed in Duro Canyon. It reenacts the life and times of early Texans.
The view out our front window.

Tom or Terry (I can't tell), oblivious to the upcoming holiday.
The park rents these way cool cabins.

Fifteen miles round trip through the canyon. No traffic. Good road. Great views.

Hey, Emily and Sarah. Want to go for a ride?
I'm not sure if the statement is "Just Say No! or maybe the Peace movement is dead, but Mary Jane was the only rusted hulk in the museum.
Here's the ancestor of our little Airstream. This 1962 Bambi was ready for the road.
Tyler's three meat plate plus beans (savory, not sweet) and Slaw mixed with just the right about of wet. Yum!
Tyler and me. If you're in Amarillo, this is the BBQ to eat!
