Adventure 342: Alpine, TX

Saddle up, Bunny!
Once again we've been blessed with traveling mercies, and we're tucked in safely to site 11 at the strangely named Lost Alaskan RV Park in Alpine, Texas. Just so you don't take traveling mercies for granted, our passage through El Paso found us side wall to side wall with big rigs, runabouts, sports cars, pickup trucks, and vans. Due to the on going road construction in the El Paso area, the lanes seemed narrow, the road certainly rough, and full of more of my frantic friends in a hurry than I needed. Fortunately, I held my place in my lane, and we made it through safely. After that, it was miles and miles of Texas until we arrived here about three P.M. We promptly got ourselves onto the bike and rode around town for a while. We found a place for dinner (Saddle Club), and we found the Catholic Church, where we'll attend the eight O'clock Mass tomorrow morning. We also took a few pictures of the very nicely done murals that are scattered on sides of buildings around town. All in all, it was a good day, though at nearly five hours of driving, it was more distance than we usually like to cover. Our dinner at the Saddle Club was quite a surprise. First, we didn't expect to find a Vietnamese Noodle Bowl in a Texas saloon. Second, it was excellent. Best of all, our waitress, Megan, a recent graduate of Sul Ross State University, was a breath of fresh air. A biology graduate, she's planning on attending graduate school either in Oregon or Washington. She wants to get into the botany field in some way. Her "cando" attitude made me smile, and of course, I tipped her excessively. Megan reminds me that dreams are real. One merely has to reach out and grab them. And in that vein, life is most certainly good, especially today.

Note: We enter five days of wilderness boon-docking in Big Bend National Park: no power, no services, most likely no blog.

 Miles and miles of Texas.
Strangely, there are three of these picnic spots between I-10 and Marfa, TX. (@60mi.)
Looks like it's some ways out there to the ranch house.
 Que Pasa, Senorita?
Lovers sing the same song in every language.

Hey, Dinah, Can you hear the call?
Texas beef turned into a Vietnamese delicacy. Scrumptious.
 Our Lady of Peace Church.

 Ola!

  1. Kelvin and siblings have a first cousin buried in Alpine (Walter Friesen). His mother was from there. Enjoy Big Bend and maybe even soak in the hot springs!
