Adventure 174: The Vines RV/Paso Robles, CA/Post A

The Vines RV Park: Site 18
This morning I was forced to utter what all second place finishers say after being whomped in the deciding game: "At least I wasn't skunked." The Wily Cager kept laying down consecutive dozelitos until I finally had to say, "Shucks"-or some such utterance. About ten we broke camp, rolled onto Carmel Valley Road, which twisted and turned for forty miles, sometimes narrowing to a one lane goat trail, until we merged with Highway 101. Fortunately, there was little traffic, no fog, great views of the coastal mountains, and finally a sea of grape vines flowing uniformly in every direction. Happily, we arrived after a pleasant, safe, and uneventful drive at around one-thirty. The Vines RV Park is really upscale, and the only reason we're here is because the state park at the Big Sur closed after a mud slide. This place is extremely high end, well run, brand new, and it still has its "We aim to please attitude." It's great, even though it's not our normal fare. After set up, a nap for Judy, and a soak in the hot tub for me, we tried to drive the back roads into town, but the local map is inaccurate, and every turn we made led to Highway 101, so we finally gave in. We washed Fric at a local car wash, scouted out the town, and generally laid our tour plan for tomorrow. This is excellent bicycling country, but Stumpy isn't quite ready for that yet, so car touring it is. It will be particularly disappointing not to be drinking as we tour this graceful vineyard country. There are only about three hundred wineries in the area, and in years gone by I would have taken a run at most of them. Alas, I'm a changed man (Thank you, diabetes), which makes Stumpy happier since she claims I wasn't that charming as an excessive drinker ( I mean who doesn't love an overly loud, speech slurring boor). Tomorrow, we are also going to drive up to another mission (San Miguel) for a little comparison. If you get a chance, do a little research on the Camino Real. Quite interesting how God has worked over time, and boy, were these Spanish missionaries busy doing God's work. Not much else to report, but we are happy to say that life is once again good, especially today.

The road surface hasn't received any attention for a few years.
Gorgeous photo taken by Stumpy from the truck.
Quite a few for sale signs along this patch of road.

The quite nice pool area at the Vines.

I do love a good soak.
