Fat Elvis |
We spent our last day in the desert enjoying the "Full Meal Deal" with our cousins, Russ and Kathy Isaac. We met them at their home in Peoria at eight this morning. Russ then drove us across town to Scottsdale to the Butterfield Pancake House. The place was hopping! Thanks to the miracle of on line place holding, Kathy was able to put us in line while we were still on the freeway. Perfectly timed, they called our name just as we walked into the place, and I was quite pleased with the fare. From breakfast, we continued East to the Boyce Thompson desert arboretum, where a lush collection of desert flora and fauna are attractively cared for by dedicated employees and volunteers. To find the variety of plants ensconced there, a traveler would have to wander far and wide in the open desert. Then, of course, we had to stop at the Mesa flea market to mingle with a few hundred of our newest elderly friends who meandered through the walkway looking at cheap Chinese goods, eclectic art items, some blood red MAGA hats, and really more worthless plastic than I can imagine, even in my wildest dreams. It reminded Judy and me of the huge market we shopped at in Seoul, Korea where I'm sure a person could find anything they could imagine ( alive or dead). Then for dinner, we hit happy hour at the Taco Guild, a former Methodist Church in old town Phoenix. A couple of margaritas later, some chips, and a variety plate of tacos, we were well on our way to a full deal. But wait, we had one more stop, the homemade ice cream parlor, the Churn, where they serve a velvety concoction called the "Fat Elvis". Now, that's what I call a full meal deal, and for sure life is good, especially today.
Not surprisingly, the cactus garden was my favorite part of the arboretum.
Selfie of day: You knew I was a snake when you let me in.
Baby Saguaro patch: cactus of the day.
Everything is lush at the arboretum because this lake provides a continuous water supply.
There must be fifty different Yucca types in the arboretum.
The flea market consists of five Amazon sized buildings holding trinkets, toys, and "stuff" none of us can live without.
Best find of the day.
We enjoyed a plate of different tacos, a couple of refreshing margaritas, and the good company of our cousins.
Russ and Kathy Isaac.
Saw this sadly proud bumper sticker, ironically stuck to the back window of a Japanese made pick up truck. Keep America GREAT!
Thank you, Lord for another promising day.
