Family vacation at Priest Lake began today despite an air quality level poor enough to bring our judgment into question. Smoke be damned! Three area fires ignited and flourished overnight in 20-30 mile an hour winds causing intense particulates to be flushed out overcoming the air. The same billows of ashy soot rose into the air over and over again on the news reports. In the actual air visibility and particulate level varied. We thought, if we're going to be cooped up anyway, we might as well be cooped up in a nice air conditioned house at Priest Lake. We drove an alternative route through Spirit Lake which allowed us to dodge the Oregon Road fire, which endangers Justin's home as well as his parents. The Medical Lake Fire, driven by the insatiable vigor the wind grew over night to a 9500 acre nightmare. It was zero percent contained when we left, but didn't hinder us at all, except for the voluminous plumes of smoke it belched. We made it safely. The cabin is secure and comfortable. Our hope is that the weather will change and a little rain will fall, knocking much of the smoke from the air. Regardless, some of us are here. Leticia and Falcon will come up tomorrow if all is well with Justin. Angela is holding down the Perch awaiting Sawyer's decision whether to come from Portland or not. He may opt for better weather, and his mother may as well. We'll see. That's about all. Basically, it' much the same as always, Life is good, especially today.
